As the election draws near, I'd like to encourage centrists, independents, and multi-issue voters (i.e., not party lap-dogs) to take a close look at Chris Rothfuss's abilities and potential.

Given Sen. Enzi's record of pandering to health-care and banking interests, it's high time Wyoming had a new voice in the Senate. Sen. Enzi is a nice person, but he's been either ineffective or just plain wrong on health care, the economy, and perhaps most importantly, energy.

Rothfuss, however, possesses experience and knowledge that will be sorely needed as America determines its energy (and subsequently foreign) policy. As a chemical engineer he worked in oil fields; as a science and technology adviser in the State Department, he dealt with diplomacy and intelligence issues.

Additionally, Rothfuss believes in protecting all of your constitutional rights, not just the convenient and easy ones. Rothfuss is a Wyoming product -- high school in Casper, first two college degrees from UW -- focused on getting our state's interests and energy expertise heard in the Senate. Please vote for him this Nov. 4.

CHEYENNE -- U.S. Senate candidates Mike Enzi and Chris Rothfuss debated subjects ranging from the economy to the Iraq war in a televised debate Sunday night.

Enzi, the Republican incumbent, is seeking his third six-year term in the Senate. Rothfuss, a chemical engineer and instructor at the University of Wyoming, is the Democratic challenger.

It was the first debate in a series of forums featuring congressional candidates scheduled to be broadcast by Wyoming PBS this week from its Riverton studio.

Enzi said Congress helped cause the economic meltdown by requiring Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to carry out social programs that encouraged people to get mortgage loans they couldn't afford.

"We tried to put more oversight onto the government-sponsored entities, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and others," said Enzi, an accountant and former member of the Wyoming Legislature. "And we weren't able to do that because every time they were brought up we were asked to put more social programs on them."

Chris Rothfuss could make a difference for you in the U.S. Senate. He's a far-thinker with solid ideas about energy conservation.

He's articulate, free to make his own decisions, and willing to stand up for individual rights.

CHEYENNE -- Chris Rothfuss spent three years in the heartland of the world of diplomacy and foreign affairs, the U.S. Department of State.

The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate recently shared some of his experiences in the agency with University of Wyoming students in Jean Garrison's international studies class.

He spoke of the art of nuanced memo writing and negotiations.

For example, one phrase banned by the department was "responsible development," Rothfuss said.

The agency people who worked on the controversy in the European Union over genetically modified food in the 1980s and 1990s, he said, believed it was a loaded phrase.

Federal, state and local candidates voiced their opinions and answered audience members’ questions during a candidate forum on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The forum was held at the 4-H building and was co-sponsored by the Platte County Chamber of Commerce and the AAUW.

Although not in attendance, letters from U.S. Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi were read aloud.

Chris Rothfuss, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senator, and Nick Carter, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senator (unexpired term: 4 years) attended the forum and discussed the recent $700 billion bailout bill.

A Newcastle man serenaded Nick Carter with his violin and the song he wrote after his wife died.

Last week, a puppy in Rock Springs peed all over the hands of Carter's campaign manager.

Carter almost got in a fight with a Casper man who cursed and threatened him for being a Democrat.

"Just because I'm running for office doesn't mean I won't pull you out of that car and teach you a lesson," Carter said.

Just another day on the campaign trail for a would-be senator.

CHEYENNE -- If the general election were held today, incumbent Republican U.S. Sens. Mike Enzie and John Barrasso would defeat their Democratic challengers by more than three-to-one margins, according to a poll commissioned by the Casper Star-Tribune.

Enzi, who is running for his third six-year term, was leading University of Wyoming instructor Chris Rothfuss 72 percent to 20 percent, respectively, with 8 percent undecided.

I didn't leave the Republican party -- it left me. I can pinpoint the year, 1979, when the "Moral Majority" (religious fundamentalists) took over the Republican precinct meetings across the nation. At the time, I was a Republican district secretary in Anchorage, Alaska.

CHEYENNE -- It's that time in this general election cycle for "Big Labor" to be back in the news.

... The Democrats have two credible candidates running for the two Senate seats but they are being outspent big time. Both Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso have millions of dollars to spend on the race.

Democrat Chris Rothfuss, a University of Wyoming instructor, has donations of about $20,000 in his race against Enzi but hasn't accepted political action committee (PAC) money....
