The Albany County Canvassing Board certified Friday the unofficial results for the 2010 primary election.

The official results show that voter turnout was 6,580, with Democrats casting 2,727 votes (41.4 percent) and Republicans casting 3,679 (55.9 percent).

Write-in candidates have emerged in the county assessor, State House District 14 and State Senate District 9 races.

Democrat Craig C. Cook received 42 write-in votes and has accepted the nomination to run against Republican Kermit C. Brown for HD 14.

In the county assessor’s race, Cheri Frank received enough write-in votes from Republicans to challenge Democrat Grant C. Showacre if she accepts the nomination.

In an e-mail, Frank said she would not comment until the official results are posted and she is “notified officially of what the process involves.”

For SD 9, Republican Matthew L. Lundberg received more than the 25 write-in votes necessary to challenge Democrat Chris Rothfuss, who defeated Jodi Guerin in his party’s primary election.

Republican voters spelled Lundberg’s name six different ways on their ballots, which all added up to 29 write-in votes.

If the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office certifies his write-in candidacy, Lundberg said he would accept the Republican nomination for SD 9.

Lundberg said he agreed to a write-in campaign for SD 9 after dismissing a plan to run for House District 45 after Republican Matt Greene had filed for the seat.

“Some folks knew that I was thinking of running and knew that Senate District 9 would be unopposed, and asked if I’d be willing to run a write-in campaign,” he said. “I agreed to do that.”

A political newcomer, Lundberg said he is looking forward to campaigning and showing the voters that he is the best candidate for SD 9.

“It’s going to be a challenge, and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said. “I don’t know a lot about Chris Rothfuss, but I’m looking forward to debating issues with him.”

Lundberg said he is a building materials salesperson and lifelong Laramie resident.

Wyoming Legislature: SD 9 winner Rothfuss credits staff, volunteers

CHEYENNE -- Chris Rothfuss credited his volunteers and organized staff after winning the Senate District 9 Democratic nomination Tuesday night.

The University of Wyoming instructor and chemical engineer won the primary election over Laramie Mayor and business owner Jodi Guerin.

With all 10 precincts reporting, Rothfuss carried 784 votes to Guerin's 510.

The seat is being vacated by Democrat Mike Massie, who is a candidate for state superintendent of public instruction.

No Republican filed for SD 9, which includes Albany County and most of Laramie.

Rothfuss said late Tuesday evening that his campaign workers canvassed all 2,000 voters in the district and talked to half of them.

"I had a lot of support from the election two years ago," Rothfuss said, referring to his loss to incumbent U.S. Senator Mike Enzi.

County clerk hopes contested races will boost voter turnout

... Laramie also has seven candidates running for seats in the Wyoming Legislature.

Democrats Chris Rothfuss and Jodi Guerin are vying for Senate District 9. Unless a write-in candidate emerges on the Republican side, the winner will be uncontested in the general election.

Democrat Cathy Connolly and Republicans Glenn Moniz and Kermit C. Brown are running unopposed in House districts 13, 46 and 14, respectively.

Democrat Seth Carson and Republican Matt Greene are running for House District 45. Both are unopposed in the primary election and — barring write-in candidates — will face each other in the general election.

People who either voted in the 2008 general election or who registered before Election Day do not need to bring picture identification, Gonzales said.

“As long as you’re already registered to vote we’ve seen your I.D. once, so it’s not necessary to see it again,” she said.

Voters who haven’t registered yet will need to bring a picture I.D. with them to the polls.

“They need to bring a picture identification with them, and they need to stop at the voter registration table because they’ll need to register to vote before they cast their ballot,” Gonzales said. “(Picture I.D.) could include a passport, a driver’s license or a student I.D.”

 [CASPER STAR TRIBUNE]

Editor:

I am writing to express my unreserved support for Chris Rothfuss for Wyoming Senate District 9. Two years ago when Chris and I both ran for United States Senate, I had the pleasure of getting to know Chris as a person and as a politician. I can say that I have rarely met a more intelligent and dedicated public servant. After serving in the U.S. Department of State as a science adviser and diplomat, Chris could have chosen to make a career for himself working inside the Beltway, but he instead chose to return to his Wyoming roots to put his knowledge and expertise to work for the people of Wyoming. Chris Rothfuss truly cares about Wyoming and its people.

Wyoming's economy is built on the energy industry. Chris' background as a chemical engineer and science adviser make him uniquely qualified to help guide Wyoming's economy through these difficult times. Wyoming deserves political leadership from experts who truly understand the intricacies of the energy industry rather than the empty rhetoric we are used to from so many politicians. Chris Rothfuss is that leader.

Further, the Chris Rothfuss I know is a good husband and father. He's a contributing member of his local community as a professor at the University of Wyoming. He's a considerate and thoughtful person who has the strength of character to fight for his constituency in Cheyenne. It was my pleasure and my honor to get to know Chris Rothfuss. I hope that in the days and weeks ahead the people of Wyoming Senate District 9 will get to know Chris Rothfuss, because the more they learn about him the more they will grow to respect and admire him, just as I have. Chris Rothfuss is the right person for the job and I am happy to endorse his candidacy for State Senate.

NICHOLAS H. CARTER, Gillette

CHEYENNE—In a year when Wyoming Democrats have struggled to find candidates – from governor on down – two A-list names are squaring off in the Senate District 9 Democratic primary.

Laramie Mayor Jodi Guerin and 2008 U.S. Senate nominee Chris Rothfuss are both aiming to succeed state Sen. Mike Massie, D-Laramie, who’s leaving the Senate after 12 years in office to run for state superintendent of public instruction.
